Stop! Grammar Time!      This week I’d like to explore the topic of grammar instruction and its success (or lack thereof) in assisting second language learning.             In considering grammar instruction and its role in influencing second language acquisition, I was able to more deeply analyze my perception of L2 learning and its purpose. It allowed me to consider questions such as: What is my role in facilitating second language acquisition; Why do I feel second language learning is important?; What do I hope students will achieve? My program strives to integrate meaningful linguistically enriching opportunities that facilitate language development. It must be noted that because it is a Pre-Kindergarten program, language skill development of students’ L1 and L2 is encouraged to be simultaneously developed within a dual language programmatic framework. As a Head Start and Educare program, the Center prides itself on being culturally and linguistically sensitive in an effort to meet the comprehensive needs of families who are mostly native Spanish speakers. To make this possible, the program operates within a two-gene...
