Stop! Grammar Time!
This week I’d like to explore the topic of grammar instruction and its success (or lack thereof) in assisting second language learning. In considering grammar instruction and its role in influencing second language acquisition, I was able to more deeply analyze my perception of L2 learning and its purpose. It allowed me to consider questions such as: What is my role in facilitating second language acquisition; Why do I feel second language learning is important?; What do I hope students will achieve? The answers to these questions help me better understand my views on the role of grammar instruction in promoting second language acquisition.
I feel that when students have access to grammatical complexities and grammar rules, they are better able to problem solve and make linguistic deductions. I don’t view second language learning as a means to a communicative end. I believe that second language acquisition is journey that involves analysis, exposure, and feedback. I feel this is second language learning is enhanced through grammar instruction.
Grammar instruction can play a significant role in positively influencing second language acquisition. Intentional grammar instruction serves as an opportunity for students to be exposed to complex sentence structures, explore linguistic patterns, and apply their knowledge. For example, In providing students with “sample paragraphs,” for example, they are better able to draw connections and understand how to apply the concepts that are being taught within a mini-lesson. Intentional grammar instruction also allows students to consciously incorporate newly learned concepts as they practice with peers.
I feel that providing developmentally appropriate grammar instruction has positive effects on L2 learning. It not only enhances and activates cognitive processes, it also creates an opportunity for students to think more critically about the language they are learning. Intentional grammar instruction, accompanied with constructive, positive feedback can significantly facilitate language learning.
